What happens when you discover a “social consciousness” that dramatically disrupts your world view? Today we meet with Karou Charou (KC), a South African satirist who transitioned from living a relatively safe life in comedy to becoming “public enemy” number one for his views on last year’s riots in South Africa.

An individual who has courted controversy - from being declared dangerous by the South African Post through to receiving an arrest warrant that was noted by the President. The question is, is this a person who warrants the title or is he being persecuted for daring to speak the truth? Listen in and let me know your thoughts.

About Karou Charou

Karou Charou (stage name), is a flamboyant artist based in South Africa. He was known for his particular comedy that combined satire and exuberant use of profanity. He has been noted for using his platform to also fight for greater community change and has transitioned into the areas of politics and community spokesmanship.

He is noted for the PARK BY THE POZIE scheme-

“PARK BY THE POZIE”(PBTP)is the first ever, organised movement of the South African Indian community to express their unhappiness with being constantly side-lined, marginalised, discriminated against and disrespected. “PARK” is South African Indian slang for ‘stay’ and “POZIE” is slang for ‘home’, so it literally translates to “STAY AT HOME”. The protest drew both admiration and condemnation in equal measure and was the first that looked to demonstrate the economic impact of the “Indian” community of the country by asking for a movement of people to sanction shopping complexes.

He has raised over 5million Rand for charitable activities in South Africa, including meal schemes in KZN through to supporting life-changing procedures for cancer patients.

He has equally courted controversy, including allegations of racism, theft, and online abuse.
