In today’s podcast, Rajan travels to the USA to meet with Piddu, Speetie and Sunny, a poly love triad and a family of one dad, two mums and four kids. This is not a relationship where a man has two wives, in fact, Speetie and Sunny were married when Piddu came to them needing a friend. The three ended up falling in love and after ten years, this is how their relationship works and shows how consenting adults - two or more - can write their own rules.
Around the world, a growing community is seeking happiness in polyamorous relationships and challenging a foundational construct of society: that a monogamous marriage is the only way to have a fulfilling long-term relationship. Sunny, Speetie and Piddu openly share their experiences, which have a lot to teach us about honesty, trust, jealousy, acceptance, mutual respect and love itself. A special thank you to our guests for wearing their hearts on their sleeves and being so jolly and candid with us today.
Polyamory can often be confused for polygamy. Polygamy is a practice whereby a person has more than one spouse, and this can be of two kinds, polygyny and polyandry. In the first kind, a man marries more than one woman and in the next a woman marries more than one man.
Polygamy is illegal in India for every religion except for the Islam religion where limited polygyny up to four wives is permitted but polyandry is absolutely prohibited.
Polyamory is different—it involves having more than one intimate relationship with the knowledge and consent of all those involved. This makes polyamory a form of ethical non-monogamy, as opposed to infidelity. The numbers are hard to estimate in part because of the stigma around polyamory in many societies. Although polyamory in India is on the rise, society tends to dismiss polyamorous or poly people as frivolous or incapable of commitment and can be abusive and hostile.
