With the General Elections having just finished in Fiji, questions have arised about what it means to be Fijian. Sitiveni Rabuka was responsible for Fiji's first coup in 1987. Fast forward 2022, Rabuka has come into power again but this time under different circumstances. He has won the 2022 Elections.
As descendants of Indian indentured labourers who are also part of the diaspora, feelings towards the election can be complicated. What remains is the trauma of the previous election and the reminder that the 1987 coup caused an exodus of a large number of Indo Fijians from the country they called home.
Fiji's 2022 election brings about a reckoning of sorts, of confronting the trauma, the pain and the legacy of 1987.
Today, Angelene Komal joins us as we deep dive into what it means to be Fiji Indian in a country where many aren't aware of where Fiji even is, we discuss the differences in our experiences and we also discuss our similarities. We realise that though we have had vastly diasporic experiences, we also are able to relate to each other.
About the Global Indian Series:
My name is Rajan Nazran Chief Explorer for the Global Indian Series, the official platform for people of Indian origin (PIO) and liberal minds, because let’s face it, we are everywhere!
For over 15 years I have travelled across the globe deep diving into 60+ countries whilst exploring the kaleidoscope of our remarkable 50 shades of brown community.
Voyaging to the edges of the Amazon, facing Ebola in West Africa, being held hostage in Eastern Europe, tapping rubber in Malaysia, drinking chai with Heads of State and sharing laughter with local fishermen – I have been there, looking for the ideas that re-shape a nation.
